5 young adult authors speak at The Dolphin Bookshop
Matt Blackstone has been dinged before.
He's hoping it won't happen again tomorrow, when the East Meadow author of the new young adult novel "Sorry You're Lost" participates in another "Tween and Teen Author 90-Second Read Event" at The Dolphin Bookshop in Port Washington.
Five authors of books for young adults are given a series of topics, such as "embarrassing parental moment" or "fury." They must each read an excerpt from their books that addresses the topic without going over 90 seconds. If they do -- the dreaded ding from a hotel-bellhop-style bell.
"I was almost done," Blackstone says of the ding he got at the last such event. "If I just had three more seconds, everything would've been OK." Blackstone says the events are "a blast. I have a really good time with it."
Author Gae Polisner of Greenlawn organizes the 90-Second Reads, and she'll be participating with her new book, "The Summer of Letting Go." Polisner started organizing such events in late 2011 to make readings more interesting for what she calls the "Twitter/Facebook/Snapchat/Tumblr" crowd.
"It's a fun way to share the flavor of our books, the essence of our characters," she says, "and not bore our audience to tears by droning on with a 10-minute excerpt from our books."
The free Tween and Teen Author 90-Second Read event takes place tonight at 7 p.m. at The Dolphin Bookshop, 299 Main St., Port Washington. For more information, call 516-767-2650 or visit thedolphinbookshop.com.
