Big fun at the Riverhead Cardboard Boat Race

Travel deals

The fifth annual Riverhead Cardboard Boat Race is coming up. This race is boatloads of fun. You build your own boat out of cardboard and duct tape. Then, you need to paddle your boat down the Peconic River and back in races of different categories, such as kids 15 and younger.

My friend and I did it last year, and we had the best time! When you make a boat, you need to have a theme. Last year, I (as Spider-Man) and my friend, Olivia Niewandomski (as Green Lantern) made The Hero Machine, a boat with the symbols of superheroes such as Wonder Woman and Captain America. We got a watermelon box from our local grocery store and wrapped it in duct tape and designed it. It took us (and my dad) about four weekends to finish it. Other themes that kids made up included Disney and Home Depot. Even though we came in last, it was a lot of fun. Believe it or not, only one boat sank during all the races last year. The race is June 29. Information: townofriverheadny.gov.
