Brendan May of Westbury and John McHugh of Wantagh landed their own radio show at Penn State University this year called "Big Apple Sports."

How did the two college freshmen get so lucky? In part it's because they'd both attended a high school summer career exploration program at Hofstra University called Introduction to Sportscasting for Teens, May says.

May, who graduated from Chaminade High School, and McHugh, a graduate of St. Anthony's, met during the summer program. When they both wound up at Penn State, they auditioned for the radio gig. "Unlike other freshmen, we were able to come in with a tape already," which they'd made during their summer program, May says.

Summer programs that allow high school students to explore future career possibilities have become so popular on Long Island that this year Hofstra compiled 70 tried-and-true and new career discovery or academic-enrichment programs into a new Pre-Collegiate Career Discovery Institute (ce.hofstra.edu/precollege), says Debbi Honorof, senior director of Continuing Education at Hofstra.

Here's a sampling of career exploration programs for high schoolers on Long Island campuses:

Biotechnology Summer Camp

APPLY By April 1

COST $3,200 residential Sunday evenings through Friday afternoons; $1,900 nonresidential

REQUIREMENTS Students must complete ninth grade and their school's Living Environment class by June 2014

WHAT IT IS This four-week program is an introduction to biotechnology research. Students work in a lab from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays. During the first two weeks, students are introduced to laboratory techniques, experimental design and data analysis. Then they work in small groups or with a partner to test their hypotheses and prepare a presentation of their work.

REQUIREMENTS Ages 12 to 18

WHAT IT IS Students get hands-on experience and in-depth critiques of their work in the classroom and in the field, as they hone their skills in TV and radio play-by-play, anchoring and reporting. Upon completion of the 9 a.m.-to-4 p.m., five-day course, students receive an evaluation of their potential and recommendations for next steps, and they leave with a demo reel of their on-camera work.

REQUIREMENTS Students must have completed 11th or 12th grade

WHAT IT IS The course introduces students to accounting, finance, production, operations, marketing, human resources and information/technology. It includes field trips to Manhattan. Students earn three college credits.
