Where to find a fresh turkey on Long Island
Harvest time means more than mums, apple pies and roasted corn by the roadside. Turkeys are one of the lesser-known, yet plentiful harvest items available at Long Island farms. Three Long Island farms are selling fresh turkeys this year, listed below.
The Long Island turkeys are all free-range birds raised on farms - not the wild turkeys that roam some parts of the East End. Aficionados say the fresh birds are more delicious, healthier and faster to cook than frozen, mass-produced turkeys.
"They are all natural, no hormones, no antibiotics," said Christina Makinajian of Makinajian Poultry Farm in Huntington, which has been selling fresh turkeys since the 1970s. Makinajian added that fresh turkeys "haven't been injected with any juices that contain preservative . . . it's just a clean turkey."
