Long considered a "gateway" to the North Fork and Hamptons, Riverhead beckons visitors with plenty of family-type attractions.
These days, there are even more reasons to consider the area a full-fledged destination: A revitalization is under way in the historic downtown district, with new restaurants and shops opening. In July, the Long Island Aquarium opened a significant new attraction -- Butterflies! -- in its new exhibition center, which includes a Hyatt hotel. Grangebel Park has been spruced up with brick walkways over the river and a stage for outdoor concerts. The new River & Roots community garden is bringing residents out to socialize as they work to grow their own fruits and vegetables.
Staycationers have a choice of lodging, including Hotel Indigo, which for the first time is offering a novel summer-share concept that will allow visitors to spend several long weekends at the hotel during the season.
