Even if you didn't spend the 1980s dedicated to synthpop, it is very likely you've heard – or danced to – a track or more involving the talents of legendary musician Vince Clarke.

His name isn't exactly a household word, but chances are you're familiar with acts such as Depeche Mode, Yaz (or Yazoo) and Erasure, especially if you grew up hanging out at the many alternative dance clubs that dotted Long Island from 1979 to 1999. Clarke was a core part of all those bands.

Classic new wave dance songs such as “Just Can't Get Enough” (Depeche Mode), “Situation” (Yaz) and “Chains of Love” (Erasure) are standards of the synthpop sound, a genre defined by the use of synthesizers to create a danceable, easily digested yet cutting-edge form of music -- and Mr. Clarke wrote, co-wrote or helped create all of those aforementioned tunes, among many more. For casual music listeners, his work is assumedly appreciable; to the many devoted fans and musicians who are aware of his career, the term “legend” assuredly applies.

Although born in the United Kingdom, in recent years Clarke has become a denizen of Brooklyn, a move that was made notable by the many websites that follow the happenings that take place in a New York borough that has become an international headquarters of hipness. His presence as a city resident is well-lauded, and his upcoming appearances in a town that has always supported underground, indie and alternative styles of music are regarded as events. With that, it should be made known that Vince Clarke will be performing on Long Island this week, in the hamlet that has also become a destination for hipsters and musicians: Montauk.

On Saturday, July 20, Clarke will DJ at the poolside “Sound Waves” party set for the Montauk Beach House. Along with performer Natalia Kills and Long Island's own DJ Hesta Prynn (formerly of hip-hop act Northern State), it will be a bash focused on fashion accessories and swimwear (by MILLY). The event starts at noon, and it's primed to attract a trendy crowd if not some possibly noteworthy guests. (This is the Hamptons, after all.) It’s the first in a series of Saturday-afternoon Beach House soirees set to wrap on Aug. 31.

Only guests who RSVP will be admitted; email info@syndicate-5.com or visit mbhsoundwaves.com for more information.
