Of all the bands that have performed on Long Island this year, few can be compared with The Misfits.

However, when it comes to the making of a comparison between the Lodi-based band and the rest of the musical world, the usual equations of success have to be thrown out – and instead replaced with points of legacy.

It’s not that The Misfits have sold enough records to compete with today’s top pop stars, and it’s highly unlikely that you've ever heard them on the radio (outside of a college station’s programming).

However, the band’s music has been covered by such major rock groups as Metallica, Guns N’ Roses and Green Day. In fact, dozens of bands, ranging from punk to metal and other hard rock subgenres, have named The Misfits as an influence. Furthermore, when the act started in the late 1970s, it was led by singer Glenn Danzig, who went on to become a recognized rock star with mainstream success.

The Misfits had broken up in 1983 (which is when Danzig left for good), but was re-formed in the mid-1990s by bassist Jerry Only, another founding member. Only has remained since then, although the rest of the lineup has changed several times.

Not really belonging to any one genre, the band has transformed from what was once closer to punk rock to its current heavy metal propensities, but remains brooding and intense in sound at all times. Additionally, the group’s music has always maintained a core concept rooted in gothic landscapes and the world of horror and dark science fiction. The band is always attired in ghoulish, over-the-top outfits,  arguably its most famous feature. Its official symbol (the “Fiend,” an image taken from the 1940s film serial “The Crimson Ghost”) has been heavily incorporated into popular hard rock music imagery since the band first used it on its “Horror Business” single, released in 1979.

The Misfits will be touring in New Zealand and Australia come January 2014, but first will wrap its 2013 stateside concert appearances with a show at The Emporium in Patchogue on Thursday, Dec. 19. The night kicks off at 7 p.m., with groups The Attack, American Ice Age and Haunted Hacienda also on the bill; tickets are available for $16.50 online at ticketfly.com.
