As Halloween fast approaches, it’s getting easier and easier to take in some scary moments before Oct. 31 actually arrives. There are numerous “haunted houses” and other spooky spots that involve ticket holders walking down dark passages and navigating blind bends while the staff of these disturbing domiciles attempt to terrify their visitors at every turn.

Of course, when it comes to any frightening foray through a landlocked building, even the creepiest structure has doors and windows, making the idea of an early exit seem possible. But over in Patchogue, there is a Halloween experience from which there is . . . no escape.

Starting on Friday, Oct. 18, the “Haunted Pirates Voyage” will begin a series of weekend expeditions down the Patchogue River, meaning no one can leave this creepy cruise until the ship returns to dock. Details of what actually takes place during this eerie junket are slim – but then again, how scary would it be if all was known in advance?

Its advertisements state that this adventure is both a “fun scare” and a “love story,” and according to the ‘Voyage Facebook page, this is a sit-down ride -- so whatever spooky moments are in store, at least you can count on being relatively comfortable. Furthermore, tickets are being sold for all ages, which should indicate that whatever terrors may lie ahead are lined up with the understanding that children 12 and under are likely to be taking part (check out a quick preview on YouTube HERE) – but those concerned should definitely investigate before making plans.

Produced by the Patchogue Riverfront Committee, the journey will leave from Off Key Tikki (31 Baker Place, 631-475-1723) on Fridays between 7 p.m.-12 a.m. (on Oct, 18, 25 and Nov. 1), Saturdays from 6 p.m.-12 a.m. (Oct. 19, 26 and Nov. 2) and Sundays 2 p.m.-8 p.m. (Oct. 20, 27 and Nov. 3) – with added jaunts on Oct. 30-31 from 6 p.m.-12 a.m.

Tickets are available in advance at brownpapertickets.com for $18 ($10 for children 12 and under) or $20 at the door ($12 for 12 and under). A 501(c) project, all profits will go to benefit Hope House Ministries (hhm.org), which provides assistance and counseling to young people, the wounded and families in crisis.
