Life on Long Island
'The Haunted Coliseum' costume dance party
With Halloween fast approaching, expect celebratory gatherings to pop up all over the Long Island nightlife circuit come the last weekend of October.
Every year, virtually all the bars, clubs and lounges in Nassau and Suffolk counties throw some sort of costume party. The festivities generally consist of prizes for top outfits and drink specials. Aside from that, for the most part these events don’t supply much more than the usual conversation, DJs, live music and dancing usually found throughout the year.
Then again, for those who consider the boogying the best part, there is an upcoming event that will allow all in attendance to both dress up and get loose to the beat for hours while a trio of internationally followed mixers take turns and spin for the crowd (of possibly thousands). It’s being called “The Haunted Coliseum.”
Set for Saturday, Oct. 27, it will take place at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum (1255 Hempstead Tpke., Uniondale, 516-794-9300, nassaucoliseum.com), and will transform Long Island’s largest venue space into a tremendous dais of dance. Running from 9 p.m.-1 a.m., the thousands of square feet usually dedicated to circuses, concerts and Islander games will instead allow for dancing, bouncing and fist-pumping during sets from DJs Otto Knows, Alesso and Sebastian Ingrosso – three Sweden-based selectors that regularly sell out appearances around the globe, delivering intense sessions of anthem-like house and EDM at each.
In addition to the Swedish selectors and the sounds they'll be engineering, entertainment will be delivered via singers, dancers, video installations and other performances. All are invited to don masks, costumes and make up, but there are restrictions on what can be worn: no dangerous or sharp objects are allowed, nor are props that could be used or confused with actual weapons or anything that would block the view of people nearby. Although this is a club-styled event, tickets are still being sold for seats, so anyone attending needs to be able to fit their outfits into a Coliseum chair.
Tickets range between $25-$100, and can be purchased at the door, or online at ticketmaster.com. It’s an all-ages event, but guests 21 and over can buy alcoholic beverages at the concession stands. For more details, check out hauntedcoliseum.com.
