As March brings spring along, the thought of summer fun doesn’t seem as impossibly far off as it may have only weeks ago, during the massive blizzard.

But the damage wrought by superstorm Sandy, on Oct. 29, is another weather-borne reality the Island is still coping with. One area especially hard hit was Fire Island. Subjected to heavy erosion, destruction of property and other trauma, many who live or usually spend time visiting the hamlets and communities found within this strip of barrier beaches question the possibility that the coming summer season across the Great South Bay will bear any resemblance to years prior.

Of course, there are many hardships, tasks and difficult moments yet to be addressed concerning the future of Fire Island -- but one glimmer of normalcy popped up on Facebook yesterday (Friday, March 1) with the post from Surf’s Out in Kismet that announced its Opening Day 2013 party is set to roll April 20.

To begin its year, the restaurant and bar is having a pig roast, and will host live music from country band Southbound while featuring line-dancing lessons. Tickets (which include tab beer and a BBQ buffet in the price) will be $45 at the door, but are also available for $40 in advance (with those pre-date purchases also including a free T-shirt).

For purchase information and other details, find Surf’s Out online at surfsout.com and facebook.com/SurfsOut.
