Super Bowl Sunday: It’s a safe bet that most Long Islanders know it’s the event for football fans, and for those who take the day seriously, the necessary preparations tend to follow a similar path – either get to a spot that will be running the game (it starts at 6:30 p.m.) and serving food and drink, or have a personal party at home (and make sure it’s also properly loaded with eats and beverages).

These are tried-and-true American traditions for sure – but for those among us who’d like to add something offbeat to their Sunday festivities, here are a few unusual activities taking place around Long Island either before or during the Big Game:

The annual Field Goal Kicking Contest

WHERE/ WHEN Front Street Station: 212 Front St. Greenport; starts at 1 p.m.

INFO 631-333-2050; facebook.com/frontstreetstation

THE DEAL Anyone can take part in Front Street’s traditional Super Bowl Sunday event, as the contestants are separated into three divisions (men, women and children), and goal posts (or something representing goal posts) will be set at a starting distance. During each round, contestants can try to kick a football through the uprights; with the posts moved back farther each round until each division produces a single victor, who will be eligible for giveaways and prizes. There will also be a crystal jewelry show during the field goal competition, and guests can then stay for the game, which will feature a free buffet starting at the ‘Bowl’s opening kickoff.

Super Bowl Splash 2014

WHERE/ WHEN 1 Riverside Blvd, Long Beach; at noon.

INFO superbowlsplash.kintera.org, facebook.com/superbowlsplash

Also an annual happening, the Long Beach Polar Bears take a plunge into the frigid Atlantic Ocean foam every Super Bowl Sunday to help raise funds for the Make-A-Wish Metro New York and Western New York foundation. The required waivers and paperwork are due at noon, and at 1:30 p.m. all those signed up will take what is likely to be a really, really cold dip (or if you’d rather stay dry but still contribute, you can sponsor a Polar Bear instead).

The Anti-SuperBowl Open Mic

WHERE/ WHEN Kreators Bar: 340 Route 25A, Mount Sinai; starts at 6 p.m.

INFO 631-509-4930; facebook.com/kreatorsbar

Looking for a bar that won’t be celebrating the Super Bowl? Starting at 6 p.m., this art-powered pub will not be running the game, instead featuring an open mic event.
