Anyone looking for a distinctive way to kick off 2013 might want to consider “007.”

Always good for unique parties, Gurney’s Inn of Montauk (290 Old Montauk Hwy., 631-668-2345, gurneysinn.com) has devised a bash powered by a singular theme to help welcome in the New Year, one that takes its cue from the cinematic semicentennial of the world’s most famous and fictional UK superspy.

It was October of 1962 when the character James Bond (“code number 007”) – already a celebrity of literature due to the writings of creator/ author Ian Fleming — began his ascent toward film icon status with the release of the first Bond movie “Dr. No.” Fast-forward to November of 2012, when “Skyfall” — the 23rd in the series of Bond films — was released, and it quickly earned hundreds of millions of dollars while becoming the highest-grossing film of all time in the United Kingdom. Needless to say, the popularity of 007 is as strong as ever, though several actors (Daniel Craig, Pierce Brosnan, Timothy Dalton, Roger Moore, George Lazenby, David Niven, and Sean Connery) have helmed the role. Perhaps, with all those different fellows taking a shot at being Bond, you’ve imagined getting a chance? If so, the Gurney’s NYE gathering will not only give you an opportunity to take a little crack at the experience, but help celebrate 50 years of Bond in the process.

Of course, playing James Bond on the big screen likely involves a great agent and several rounds of auditioning, but on Tuesday, Dec. 31, all who attend the “From Montauk With Love” party at Gurney’s are invited to arrive dressed in their Bond best — which for guys could mean the classic 007 tuxedo, or as one of the many unusual members of the canon’s rogues gallery — while ladies can go as any of the “Bond girls,” the ever-changing roster of the secret agent’s female film counterparts. There will be a look-alike contest to help decide whose outfits are the top — but even if you’d rather attend as yourself, all guests will receive a 90-minute cocktail hour (with seafood bar, hors d’oeuvres and pasta station) to be followed by a five-course dinner, a live performance from band Joe Delia & Thieves (who will be expanding into “Joe Delia and His Orchestra” for the evening), show dancers, a DJ spinning all night, Bond-themed scenery, a Viennese dessert table, party favors, open bar, door prizes and a Champagne toast.

Tickets are $145 per person, with a $590 1-night stay package also available (that includes the NYE party, an ocean view room and use of the Sea Water Spa facilities). For more information, call 631-668-2345. And as an added bonus, all are invited (even those not attending the Inn’s NYE event) to take part in the annual “Polar Bear Dip” on Tuesday, Jan. 1 at 10:30 a.m. Dippers are to meet in the spa lobby, can pre-warm in the spa, and are asked to make a $10 per-person donation or to bring nonperishable food items — with the cash going to the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization Paddlers for Humanity (p4h.org) and edibles to the relief collective East End Cares.
