Life on Long Island
Annual 'Field Goal Kicking Contest' returns to Front Street Station
During the summer, Greenport is alive with tourists and travelers, all of whom combine with seasonal dwellers and locals to make for one of the more festive areas Islandwide. However, during the winter, the neighborhood calms down significantly -- with only a few local residents to be found on its streets, attempting to brave the whipping, frigid winds the waterside town sees every year at this time . . . but that doesn’t mean that fun comes to a complete halt.
Case in point: while most bars and eateries in Nassau and Suffolk handle the crowds that come out to watch the Super Bowl with wings and drink specials, Front Street Station in Greenport takes its guests outside before watching football in order to actually play a little football.
Of course, not the tackling and passing parts of the game, but there will be legwork involved as the family-friendly restaurant and pub once again will be holding its annual “Field Goal Kicking Contest” on Sunday, Feb. 3.
The ‘Station does it every year, allowing its clientele to compete for to-be-announced prizes, awarded to the victors in each of the day’s divisions (Males Over 18, Women Over 18, All Under 18). It takes place in the spot’s back lot, with wins achieved by whoever manages to eventually punt the pigskin the farthest.
The contest starts around 1 p.m. (with sign-ups at noon), and will be followed by everyone coming back inside to watch the San Francisco 49ers take on the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII; for more information check out Front Street Station online at facebook.com/front.station.5.
