Although Leonardo DiCaprio has recently become synonymous with “The Great Gatsby,” the F. Scott Fitzgerald book from which his role (and the film he stars in) was adapted has much more to do with Long Island than anything Hollywood could put into or take from the classic tale.

For those who may not be aware, Fitzgerald took much inspiration for his novel from extravagant get-togethers held in North Shore mansions around the Island’s "Gold Coast" during the Roaring ‘20s. The wild, flashy, jazzy bashes were – much like the Hamptons scene is today – a place where the wealthy and fabulous mingled with abandon.

Fast-forward 90-odd years, and -- while the current North Shore still has plenty of large houses and fun things to do -- it is undoubtedly a bit more subdued than the world and lifestyle DiCaprio recently portrayed in his turn as the book’s namesake character. However, on June 11, there’s a party ready to roll that will give anyone interested a chance to party like its 1929, and – like the story of “Gatsby” -- it just happens to be taking place far north of the LIE.

Presented by Village Connection Magazine, Jellyfish in Centerport is hosting the “Speakeasy Soiree:” an affair where guests are asked to come dressed in period clothes – think flappers, tommy-gun gangsters or other styles characteristic of the 1920s (themed dress not required, but suggested) – with all who come decisively attired in such garb (or at least decked out in blatant era accessories) to be rewarded with half-priced drinks. The event is set to benefit the preservation of the Arthur Dove-Helen Torr Cottage (heckscher.org/collection_dove_torr) and its future use for educational arts programs; donations are voluntary, and all money collected from purchases of the evening’s signature cocktail (“The Arthur Dove”) will go directly to the cottage cause.

Doors open at 7 p.m., with no cover charge to enter. There will be free passed hors d’oeuvres plus live music from band No Regrets and performer Kevin Russell Kaye, and the attendee deemed best dressed” in themed attire will win a Jellyfish gift certificate and two tickets for a future show at The Paramount in Huntington (370 New York Ave., 631-673-7300).
