The Montauk party scene of 2013 had already opened by the time the first-ever edition of Sound Waves kicked off in late July of that year. Before the celebrity DJ-focused daytime bash had existed, those looking to surpass the usual Hamptons pricey-ticket galas and table service-driven mega-clubs were already flocking to Montauk for happenings such as the admission-free weekend concerts held at Surf Lodge, and the semi-secret throw-downs occasionally found at Ruschmeyer’s — but once ‘Waves started up at Montauk Beach House, employing such notable new wave musicians as Vince Clarke (Depeche Mode, Yaz, Erasure), Roger Taylor (Duran Duran) and Andy Rourke (The Smiths) as guest DJs, the free admission weekly Saturday shindig went smash and became a hot stop for the rest of that season.

Following its rookie-year success, Sound Waves announced a return scheduled for July 2014, and among the first details revealed concerning its sophomore season was a change of venue — stating it would now be held at Gurney's Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa (290 Old Montauk Hwy., 631-668-2345), which not only offered a bigger stage but the luxurious atmosphere characteristic of a beachfront location — and, as scheduled, the 2014 opening took place at Gurney’s on July 19. According to the event’s Facebook page, it received over 800 attendees, and featured Ben Lovett (of the Grammy Award winning band Mumford & Sons) as a DJ. Meanwhile, across town, Montauk Beach House replaced Sound Waves with the similarly-styled weekly “Summer Set Saturdays,” which is also built upon the celebrity DJ/ free soiree format. In addition, it added “Don’t Want To Go Back Sundays,” a no-cover party themed around the idea of giving those visitors waiting to depart Montauk at the end of the weekend a way to go out with some final fun.

However, despite the professed success of the Lovett-led kickoff, the second Sound Waves (set for July 26) never took place, and a few days before the slated third gathering, the announcement was made: Sound Waves was headed back to Montauk Beach House.

The reasons why aren’t being publicized, but what has been made clear is that Summer Set Saturdays will remain as is, shifting Sound Waves a day and combining it with the ‘Beach House’s aforementioned Sunday bash into “Sound Waves presents Don’t Want To Go Back Sundays.”

Expect a similar format of star DJs and gratis admittance with a start time of 11 a.m. — but as this is a party for people planning to leave, it also offers complimentary luggage storage with the purchase of a day pass.
