Life on Long Island
SBSS: 'South By South Shore' coming to Patchogue
Every spring, the world of music and entertainment centers on the massive series of conferences and festivals known as “South By Southwest” (SXSW) -- an annual March happening that consists of (almost) two weeks of concerts, film screenings and the debut of innovative technologies. For people who love breaking events in culture, it’s an exciting occurrence – but as it takes place in Austin, TX, most Long Islanders are forced to experience SXSW from afar – via the web, radio and TV.
However, come the first week of April, a gathering inspired by the artsy activities in Austin is set for Patchogue – giving Islanders a chance to sample some creative undertakings a bit closer to home.
From April 2-7, “South By South Shore” (SBSS) will roll throughout Patchogue Village, a six-day celebration driven by art, music, theater, film and performances. Presented by the Patchogue Arts Council, there will shows aplenty, with bands on-hand to play everything from indie, folk, classical and jazz to metal, jam rock and funk. Poetry, movie showings and art exhibits are to be scheduled as well, with the final details on the calendar of events yet to be finalized. There will also be lots of food and drink involved, as such area venues as the BrickHouse Brewery, Bobbique, The Tap Room, Roast Coffee & Tea Trading Company and PeraBell Food Bar are already listed as sponsors – as is the Blue Point Brewing Company, Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts, 89 North, Plaza Cinema & Media Arts Center, WEHM-FM and the not-for-profit arts organization Worldwide Voices.
Furthermore, on Saturday, April 6, there will be a “sidewalk promenade” in Patchogue Village starting at 4:30 p.m., which will feature several musicians and costumed participants marching a route, and will be open for all to join.
