For some, the concept of such devastation was, until recently, a foreign one – as were the efforts of the American Red Cross, the disaster relief organization that is best recognized for its action taken during distant disasters. Now it is aiding in area rescue.

Delivering water, snacks and hot meals to local people, the Red Cross has also set up six fixed sites, three in Nassau County and three in Suffolk -- and has provided thousands of meals since its arrival ( Fundraisers to help storm victims and groups aiding in the assistance of those in need have been taking place across Long Island during the aftermath of Sandy, and on Saturday, Nov. 10, Napper Tandy’s of Miller Place is hosting a benefit concert to specifically help the Red Cross continue its response.
