Life on Long Island
Ringside Bar comes out swinging
Hicksville is not exactly a bar-stacked town. In fact, there are only a couple of dedicated late-night stops, and one of them was No Limits -- which is now no more.
After almost two decades in existence, the simple, mostly-locals bar closed its doors in 2013. However, a new tenant has moved into the No Limits former digs, one armed with both a fresh game plan and a brand new look.
As of mid-December, the spot is now known as Ringside Bar, and has transformed what was once a fairly plain place into a tavern with a theme: boxing. It’s not necessarily that this is a sports bar -- as it leans more toward live music and events -- but this new pub repurposes such pugilistic props for decor use as ring ropes (creating a “corner” as part of the front window seating), display-encased gloves once worn by Jake LaMotta, a vintage championship belt and some wall photography that recalls the “Sweet Science.”
Another nod to boxing can be found on the cocktail menu, as such punched-up potables as the “Cinderella Man” (vodka, cranberry juice, ginger ale), the “Sting Like A Bee” (Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Honey, ginger ale) and the “Ringside Punch” (two types of rum, pineapple juice, cranberry juice) are available for purchase, along with several other sorts of spirits.
But music is also a part of the Ringside motif, as a number of classic rock album covers (including the sleeve for “Great American Music,” a 1981 release from Long Island band Good Rats) hang along the wall -- and the weekends here see live bands starting at 9 p.m.
The bar’s event schedule is still being developed, and its kitchen won't be working until February, but so far Ringside has seen some active parties -- and starting Wednesday, Jan. 29, karaoke will also become a weekly happening. But even when there isn't any sort of extra entertainment underway, guests can fire up the house jukebox or even play such retro video games as Broadway, Galaga and Ms. Pac-Man.
