Life on Long Island
Oscar party at Plaza Cinema and Media Arts Center
There are award shows on television, and then there is the broadcast of the Academy Awards ceremony.
Watched around the world, it’s the night when movie stars come out in droves, dressed in regal fashion and walk a red carpet (surrounded by hundreds of photographers, reporters and pundits) into The Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, to both be seen while simultaneously receiving a program of entertainment and reflection concerning the majesty of the film industry – all with the reward of learning which actors, films and filmmakers have been chosen from those nominated to be the best -- the winners of the Oscar statuette.
Yes, this is a fabulous occurrence – and while those who are part of that world get to witness the rite from within, for the rest of us it’s a night spent glued to the couch, viewing from home. Sure, most of us find our furniture comfortable enough – but for some, there will always be that inner wish to be there, in Hollywood, nestled shoulder-to-shoulder with the Hollywood elite.
Truth be told, that is indeed a hard nut to crack. But -- if you would really enjoy taking in this year’s spectacle while doing more than simply moving between your laptop (to comment on Facebook), your phone (to tweet) and bowls of snacks (to eat), the Plaza Cinema and Media Arts Center in Patchogue might have something to help you spice up the whole shebang.
On Sunday, Feb. 24, Plaza Cinema is throwing its annual Plaza Oscar Party, an affair designed to make this year’s Oscars into more than just a session in front of the ‘tube for Long Islanders. It starts at 7:30 p.m., and is based on the showing of the 85th Academy Awards ceremony live broadcast, but will also offer spirited discussions of cinema – as well as Oscar trivia and ballots distributed to all in attendance in order to show who can pick the most winners.
Guests are asked to wear formal attire (cocktails dresses, suits), and will receive food (plates include warm cheese brioche puffs, salmon mousse on toast, cocktail ribs, chicken Monterrey and chocolate mousse) paired with an international selection of wines. Tickets are $35 for members, $45 for nonmembers, and must be procured in advance (seating is limited; food is included).
