Movement: a night of soulful house

Like many styles of music, the demesne of dance can be broken down into several subgenres; one of which is soulful house.

Also known as deep house, it’s a departure from the sharp electronic samples and rapid-pounding bass blueprint followed by much of today’s modern dance production; instead it utilizes softer, relaxing elements to weave an earthy (yet still energetic) tone — and relies upon vocals focused on love, relationships and other personal subject matter, rather than the simpler party chants found in most EDM.

The niche has been a part of the global dance music scene for decades, with much of early house music falling within its margins — yet, for whatever the reason, soulful house gatherings are extremely rare on LI — which normally forces indigenous lovers of the stuff to either listen online or travel into the city (for live events) to get a fix.

However, come Friday, April 25, one of the Island’s few semiregular local soulful house bashes will be returning, and it’s set to provide an entire night of deep beats, as well as lots of space for dancing.

The event is called the “Movement” party, and it was held monthly during the second half of 2013 — but as of this year, its last turn took place in January. Nonetheless, Movement is finally back in action this Friday at 10 p.m., and will be held at the roomy Avanti nightclub in Westbury. The evening’s itinerary is impressive by soulful house standards, as it will be bringing together DJs Ruben Toro, Tony Touch and Rob James to spin throughout the evening.

Toro (AKA the “Latin Bull”) has been working the NYC circuit since the 1990s. Also known as a skilled remixer, he was the talent behind “KISS Club Classics,” a five-hour mixshow formerly found on the now-defunct radio station 98.7 “KISS-FM” (he can now be heard live online mixing Saturday nights from 10 p.m.-3 a.m. on i-SoulRadio.com).

Equally notable, Tony Touch is an internationally in-demand DJ, frequently working overseas. (He too was once a fixture on various FM outlets, although his current program “Toca Tuesdays” can be heard weekly on SiriusXM satellite radio.) As for the Huntington-born James, although a successful mixer in his own right, he is especially distinguished as a singular local talent that champions soulful house during his LI sessions — especially as the regular resident DJ of Movement.

Admission is $10 before 12 a.m., $15 after; for more information connect with the Movement party online at facebook.com/movementlongisland.
