One of the most prominent events to take place anywhere on Fire Island, the annual Miss Fire Island Contest will be returning to Cherry Grove on Saturday, Sept. 6.

It’s the 49th edition of the competition -- a battle between several drag entertainers all vying to win monetary awards and such titles as Miss Fire Island, Miss Cherry Grove, Most Popular and Entertainer of the Year. The talent engages in lip-synching, dance numbers, demonstrations of personality and the wearing of colorful (and often outlandish) outfits -- all as part of a show that has grown from a small party that (back in 1966) was originally a mostly local affair into a gala that draws heavy crowds and generous media coverage.

In addition, the tournament’s Coronation Ball revue is set for the next day (Sunday, Sept. 7), and participants will have a second chance to perform. Both shows are proceeding at The Grove Hotel and Ice Palace Nightclub, with doors opening at noon on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets for the contest are $60 in advance or $65 at the door; the entrance fee to the coronation is $25 in advance, $30 the day of the event. For purchase and further information, visit

The Grove Hotel and Ice Palace Nightclub: Dock Walk, Cherry Grove, 631-597-6600.
