Life on Long Island

If you think that all Long Islanders under 30 are only into pop and hip-hop, JB Baretsky proves at least one member of the area’s youth leans toward sounds that pre-date twerking, boy bands, iTunes and auto-tune -- as well as pretty much anything else that’s currently trending in today’s youth culture.

Baretsky, a 26 year-old from Commack, is an accomplished singer who has performed successfully around NYC and its metro area – but unlike many colleagues in his age group, JB is a jazz singer, delivering standards and original music. He also takes on contemporary tunes, but twists everything to fit his signature style.

However, while his sound is classic, his style is full of youthful spirit – which reveals itself during moments of friendly onstage swagger and banter. Otherwise, garbed in dressy clothes (often including a tie), Baretsky takes his shows seriously, and delivers an honest set. Anyone curious to catch him in action can do so today (Saturday, Sept. 28) at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue as part of the school’s alumni weekend (JB is an SJC alum).

Promoted as “Java, Jazz and JB Baretsky,” admission is free and the performance is open to all. It takes place on-campus at the McGann Conference Center, starting at 3 p.m.; for more information, call 631-687-1434 or email amalzone@sjcny.edu.
