Freestyle set to ‘explode’ on Black Friday
With the extended Thanksgiving holiday weekend fast upon us, some area residents may be looking for ways to entertain out-of-town guests planning to stay longer than just for a Thursday turkey dinner.
When discussing any possible late-night plans with your company, chances are that all will understand that an evening out at a club may include fun cocktails, DJs spinning beats and an opportunity to wear clothes that may be otherwise too trendy for daily life -- but if you ask visiting Midwesterners, Southerners and West Coast folk what their favorite freestyle song happens to be, it’s very likely you will be asked in reply, “What’s freestyle?”
One way to respond to such a comment is to explain that unlike such popular dance genres as disco, house, techno, electro and trance, the romantically inspired, percussion-heavy subgenre of freestyle was a local phenomenon during the late 1980s and early 1990s. While the sound never fully broke nationally, it was once rare to find a LI dance party that wasn't featuring DJs playing a great deal of freestyle -- and it’s still not all that strange to find at local clubs today, albeit generally at spots geared toward the 35-and-over crowds.
Another could be to bring them to The Emporium in Patchogue this weekend for the mega-venue’s latest “Freestyle Explosion” to let them see and hear for themselves.
These live performance “explosions” take place randomly at The Emporium (averaging 2-3 occurrences a year), and the next is set for Nov. 29, with such genre stars as Judy Torres (“Come Into My Arms,” “Please Stay Tonight”), Coro ("Where Are You Tonight,” "My Fallen Angel"), Lisette Melendez ("A Day In My Life [Without You],” “Together Forever”) and Noel (“Silent Morning”) slated to take the stage.
Tickets are available for $20 in advance at ticketfly.com, but may be more at the door. Age of admission is 21 and over. For more information check out The Emporium online at theemporiumny.com and facebook.com/emporiumny. Doors open at 6 p.m.; dress to impress. For VIP table reservations call 631-275-6200.
