Life on Long Island
'Freestyle Blast' at The Memorare
The entertainer, performer, promoter and host known as Mickey B is best-known for putting together shows that feature classic pop and rock artists.
However, while doo-wop acts and esteemed crooners from the 1950s and 1960s might be the norm for Mickey’s get-togethers (such as his upcoming event, the “Golden Oldies Winter Spectacular” with The Brooklyn Bridge, set for Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Patchogue Theatre for the Performing Arts), he’s also got a soon-to-be happening that will break away from his oldies-formatted standard fare.
Freestyle music may not dominate the Long Island nightlife scene like it did during the late 1980s and early 1990s, but when any of the genre’s core artists take a stage at a nightclub somewhere in either Nassau or Suffolk; the crowds still arrive with regularity. Of course, there are also Long Islanders who love freestyle, but would rather pass on the typical late-evening spot experience – and for those freestyle fans who’d enjoy catching a couple of freestyle’s popular names in a bit more of an intimate setting, Mickey B.’s party set for Saturday, Jan. 26, might be worthy of consideration: the “Freestyle Blast.”
Taking place at The Memorare (2183A Jackson Ave. Seaford) – not a nightclub but a smaller hall -- the bash will feature live performances from freestyle stars George Lamond (“Bad of the Heart,” "Where Does That Leave Love?") and Judy Torres (“Come Into My Arms,” “Please Stay Tonight”). In addition, there will be a DJ spinning freestyle throughout the occasion, plus a hot buffet, dessert and cash bar.
