Life on Long Island
Flynn's is open and ready for Memorial Day Weekend
After all the damage suffered on Fire Island during Superstorm Sandy, it didn’t seem likely that summering out in those barrier beach hamlets would ever be the same.
Destruction of property and heavy erosion have been among the issues both residents and business owners have had to contend with while trying to restore the many communities found across the Great South Bay to previous conditions, or even to simple functionality. However, the spring of 2013 saw an intense recovery movement by several Fire Island restaurants and clubs, with a fervent goal to be up and running by Memorial Day Weekend, and that effort seems to be coming to fruition.
Surf’s Out in Kismet led the charge with an opening day affair back on April 20, and since then such popular stops as Maguire’s and The Sand Bar in Ocean Beach, Le Dock in Fair Harbor and Casino Bar in Davis Park have also returned to business – and as of this weekend (starting on Friday, May 17), the always bustling Flynn’s in Ocean Beach is receiving guests as well.
Until June 20, Flynn’s will only open on weekends, but that won’t impede its Memorial Day Weekend plans -- as Flynn’s has always put together big parties to welcome the summer – and this year won’t be any exception, as on Sunday, May 26, popular club DJ Epic and reggae band King Wellington will be on-hand to entertain (starting at 3 p.m.). However, the main event will take place on the day before (Saturday. May 25) as Long Island’s most celebrated mixer DJ Theo Pisani will spin, following an opening session from Chris Kenny and with performances from the Karma & Soul club dancers.
Cover prices for the holiday parties have yet to be announced, but anyone looking to save on Theo’s bash can join Flynn’s mailing list, as all who sign up will receive an email that allows for a half-price admission (the discount email should arrive by Friday, May 24).
