'Books and Bikinis' at The Sloppy Tuna
When it comes to The Sloppy Tuna in Montauk, it’s safe to say that books are not necessarily among the first things that come to mind.
The Sloppy Tuna, an incredibly popular stop in the summer, is best-known for attributes such as a complete lack of bad attitude, no dress code and a location mere feet from the shore. Usually more of a draw for those looking for lively fun in the sun rather than literary pursuits – it just so happens that on May 25, a tome penned by a Montauk resident will serve as the core for the beach club’s Memorial Day weekend celebration.
Actually, it’s a book that was more “snapped” than “penned,” as the work -- entitled “A View from The Window” -- is a collection of portraits taken by photographer Grant Monahan. Monahan’s family owns the “Ditch Witch,” a food truck that operates from Montauk’s Ditch Plains beach, and Grant took several pictures of his family’s clientele – directly from inside the vehicle, over its counter. After successfully raising funds online to self-publish his efforts, The Sloppy Tuna is throwing him a “Books and Bikinis” launch party, which kicks off at 11 p.m.
At this point, one might wonder how exactly “bikinis” becomes part of a bash based around a book – but it just so happens that this soiree simultaneously celebrates the creations cooked up by another local, Montauk-based designer Annie Perini. Her venture was also funded via an Internet campaign and Perini’s line of mix-and-match two-piece swimwear is making its debut at this event as well, and will do so with models wearing the “Perini Bikinis” and then contributing to a “Best Bikini” contest (a happening much more along the lines of regular ‘Tuna gatherings) – and will be hosted by actor/ reality TV star (“The Bachelor,” Season 7) Charlie O’Connell.
