While most clubs and bars have planned something big and expensive for New Year’s Eve 2012, the Velvet Lounge in Setauket is going for something different –- in party, personality and price.

A small spot located north of Stony Brook University, it has been one of Long Island’s leading stops for fresh indie music, alternative DJs and other interesting events since first coming to be during the mid-2000s – and while quite a few hipster bars and clever coffeehouses have popped up throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties since the Lounge first came into existence, it has remained a solid bet for unique and original entertainment since its inception.

This year’s NYE bash will follow suit, with local bands Secondhand Smoke, Heavy Duty Super Ego and The Free Candy Band set to appear.

Secondhand Smoke (from the Selden/Centereach area) is generally a cover troupe, but open to performing tracks from many genres. As for Heavy Duty Super Ego (Port Jefferson/Medford in origin), they are an indie band that plays original music, folksy at times but always rock-minded.

The Free Candy Band – an indie act from Brentwood that does both original music and cover tunes, all with a sharp piano-driven, jazzy rock feel – is especially notable as musician Erinn Furey, an American Idol Season Four top-50 finalist, is the lead vocalist. All these groups are scheduled to play, as is DJ Kaution, the event mixer who spins an eclectic mix of hip-hop, dance and rock.

Doors open at 9 p.m. for $10 at the door, with the age of admission 21 and over. For more information, head online to velvetloungeny.com.
