Life on Long Island
'Summer Set Saturdays' at the Montauk Beach House
Montauk is approximately 11 miles from the next closest Hamptons hamlet (Amagansett), and as it is the last town before LI ends, it has no other neighbor -- making it quite remote compared to most LI localities. However, one could insinuate that it’s the personality of the locality that truly makes it distant from the rest of the Hamptons, especially in the summer.
Much like other communities on the South Fork, Montauk (MTK) receives a heavy influx of New York City summer residents and jet-setters during the warmer months -- but while the nightlife found around Southampton and East Hampton tends to cater to well-to-do Manhattanites seeking upscale, exclusive and expensive parties, MTK has become a draw for the hipper, “Brooklyn-centric” side of NYC culture -- which basically translates into parties that are very casual, inviting and often low-cost or free to attend.
Luxury Montauk resorts Surf Lodge and Ruschmeyer’s may be costly as far as accommodations are concerned, but both have become regular seasonal hosts of relaxed, free-to-enter, celebrity-friendly affairs that are open to the public -- and last summer the chic Montauk Beach House hotel had joined that scene with its own event series “Sound Waves.” The bash brought modish DJs in to spin on Saturday afternoons, some of which also happened to be beloved 80s new wave musicians (such as Vince Clarke of Erasure and Roger Taylor of Duran Duran) – but as Sound Waves has since shifted to Gurney’s Resort & Seawater Spa for 2014 (it begins on July 19), the Beach House was seemingly left with a serious social calendar space to fill.
As it turns out, that “space” has been filled exquisitely with a new program called “Summer Set Saturdays,” now rolling weekly until Aug. 30.
Anyone can RSVP for this free daytime soiree that runs from noon-7 p.m., and by doing so will gain access to a get-together which promises sessions from some of the most talented DJs that currently work the funkier side of the New York City nightlife circuit -- including Stretch Armstrong (June 21), Prince Language and Twilite Tone (both on June 28), the Tiki Disco crew (July 19) and Cosmo Baker (Aug. 30). In addition, some well-respected musicians will be in to mix, such as Jahphet “Roofeeo” Landis (July 5) and Talib Kweli (July 26), with more special guests to be announced.
